Recommended by the AIRBAG Task Force of the German
automotive industry, Passenger Presence Detection (PPD) systems have been in
series production since the beginning of 1994. Used to manage
'situation-appropriate' airbag deployment, PPD detects the presence of a person
in the passenger seat of an automobile. If the system detects the absence of an
occupant (or of a seat force of less than a predetermined threshold), it
prevents bag deployment to avoid the high cost of replacement. |

Functional Characteristics
PPD is designed to be a low-cost, fail-safe passive system
that assures high reliability when integrated into any currently manufactured
seat design. It utilizes IEE's patented technology that:
-Detects forces greater than 12kg (representative of a
three-year-old child with a 120mm diameter sit-in area), and rejects items such
as bags and briefcases.
-Allows detection of the entire seat area, regardless of
the passenger's sitting position.
-Is not affected by seat location or adjustment.
-Remains completely invisible to the user. |

Key Design Advantages
PPD offers automotive designers ultimate design freedom
because the sensor's slim, flexible design adapts easily to any seat form or
contour, and is unaffected by user-placed seat covers, cushions, or therapeutic
aids (i.e. wooden beads).
Variable resistance permits engineers to specify
inexpensive electronic interfaces, and the sensor's lack of moving parts makes
it impervious to shock and vibration. It is also self-monitoring for open and
short circuits using inexpensive and simple testing procedures. |
