	With it's vast experience in designing and producing safety sensors and systems, IEE now offers PROTECTO, a powerful active pedestrian protection system. this consists of three central compartments, with the most important element being the sensor system. Integrated inside the bumper, this robust sensor system enables Protecto to get in direct contact with all impact objects.
	Operating hand-in-hand with the second component - the algorithm - the sensor is able to discriminate between pedestrians and other objects. Measuring and computing pressure levels, as well as impact width and position, all helps to provide extensive information about the objects and thereby allowing robust discrimination. When a pedestrian is hit by a car bumper, the sensor and algorithm detect this fact and only then trigger the actuators located beneath the hood. A significantly lifted hood provides the pedestrian with an energy-absorbing area and enough distance to any hard points beneath the hood, like the engine. This dramatically reduces injury to the pedestrian during a frontal impact. The entire process - from bumper impact to a fully lifted hood - takes about 45 ms. As per customer requirements, IEE can provide actuator technologies for an optimal system solution.
